What is a flea?

Fleas belong to the order Siphonaptera, which includes approximately 2,500 species in three suborders: Pulicomorpha, Ceratophyllomorpha and Malacopsylloidea. The most common fleas that infest pets are Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea) and Ctenocephalides canis (dog flea).

How do fleas move?

Fleas jump very far for their size, which lets them move quickly and pass from one host to another. Their hind legs are long and muscular, and an elastic protein called resilin sits at their base. Before jumping, the flea contracts its muscles and compresses this resilin, which stores energy like a spring. Once released, this energy propels the flea into the air, over a distance that is impressive for its size.

How do fleas locate their hosts?

Fleas are attracted to chemical and thermal signals emitted by their hosts. They are sensitive to the carbon dioxide (CO2) that mammals breathe, as well as body heat and vibrations. Fleas are also attracted to pheromones and body odors from pets. These signals guide them to the food source, where they can latch on and begin feeding.

What is the lifespan and reproduction cycle of fleas?

The flea life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, nymph (or pupa), and adult. After feeding on a host, a female flea lays eggs which usually fall off the host and disperse into the environment. The eggs hatch into larvae within a few days, feeding on organic debris and adult flea feces. The larvae then molt into nymphs, which spin a protective cocoon before metamorphosing into adult fleas. The lifespan of an adult flea also depends on various factors, including food availability and environmental conditions. In general, an adult flea can live from a few weeks to several months. A female flea begins laying eggs 24 to 48 hours after taking her first blood meal.
