Most people don’t think much about mice. They can be a nuisance, but they are not really dangerous, are they? In fact, mice can be quite dangerous and pose a real threat to your health and your home. Here is why they are more dangerous than you think.
Mice carry diseases
The main danger of mice is to your health. Through their droppings and urine, they can transmit diseases such as salmonellosis, hantavirus or leptospirosis. They also carry ticks, which can carry Lyme disease. The risk is limited, but it is a reason to act quickly, especially with young children or a vulnerable person at home. After mice have been around, clean the affected surfaces with disinfectant, wearing gloves.
To keep them out, start by blocking the cracks and holes they use to get in. Check the bottom of doors, pipe openings and air vents: a mouse fits through a very small hole. Keep food in airtight containers and clean up crumbs straight away. Store seeds, pet food and cereals in closed boxes too, including in the cellar and garage.
